# Manta Ray Diving: 85 Sites Scored — Where to Actually See Them
A manta ray gliding overhead at arm's length is the single most graceful thing I've seen underwater. Three-meter wingspan. Zero effort. The thing weighs 1,500 kg and moves like it weighs nothing. My bubbles bothered it more than my presence did.
[OkToDive cross-references manta rays across 85 scored dive sites](/species/manta-ray) — more than any other megafauna species in our database. But "manta rays documented" and "you'll actually see one" are different things. Here's where the data says your odds are best.
The Two Species
Oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris): Up to 7m wingspan. Open water, migratory. The big ones.
Reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi): Up to 5m wingspan. Coastal, resident populations. More predictable encounters because they return to the same cleaning stations and feeding areas.
Most dive encounters are with reef mantas at cleaning stations — specific spots on the reef where small cleaner fish remove parasites from the mantas. The mantas queue up. You watch. It's like a car wash, but majestic.
Top Manta Ray Destinations by OkToDive Score
1. Maldives — Score: 78.9 | Marine Life: 94
The highest density of manta cleaning stations I've encountered. South Ari Atoll has a resident population of 5,000+ reef mantas. Year-round encounters, peaking August–November. Hanifaru Bay hosts seasonal feeding aggregations — hundreds of mantas in a single lagoon, filter-feeding in synchronized spirals. Snorkeling only in Hanifaru; scuba encounters at cleaning stations throughout the atolls.
Best months: Year-round, peak August–November Encounter type: Cleaning stations (scuba) + feeding aggregations (snorkel) Cost: $3,000–$8,000/week (liveaboard or resort)

2. Raja Ampat, Indonesia — Score: 81.4 | Marine Life: 99
Manta cleaning stations at Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge are highlights of every [Raja Ampat liveaboard](/blog/raja-ampat-liveaboard) itinerary. Both reef and oceanic mantas documented. The encounters happen alongside the world's richest biodiversity — so even if mantas are a no-show (rare), every dive delivers.
Best months: October–April Encounter type: Cleaning stations (scuba) Cost: $4,000–$7,000/10-day liveaboard
-> [Full Raja Ampat scoring](/dive-sites/raja-ampat)
3. Hawaii (Kona Coast) — Score: 65.0
The famous manta ray night dive. You kneel on the sand at 10 meters, hold a light, and reef mantas do barrel rolls inches from your face, feeding on plankton attracted by the lights. No certification beyond [Open Water](/blog/how-to-get-scuba-certified) needed. I've done a lot of diving. This remains one of the most surreal experiences I've had underwater.
Best months: Year-round (resident population) Encounter type: Night dive feeding (scuba) — unique in the world Cost: $150–$250/dive
-> [Full Hawaii scoring](/dive-sites/hawaii-kona)
4. Komodo, Indonesia — Score: 78.4
Manta Point and Cauldron are reliable cleaning station encounters. The mantas here are predominantly reef mantas, and the viz (15–25m) is typically good enough for wide-angle photography. Combine with Komodo dragon treks and some of the strongest current diving in Indonesia.
Best months: April–November (dry season) Encounter type: Cleaning stations (scuba) Cost: $2,000–$5,000/week liveaboard
-> [Full Komodo scoring](/dive-sites/komodo-national-park)
5. Fiji — Score: 78.5
Kadavu and Yasawa Islands host seasonal manta aggregations. Fiji's warm water (26–30C year-round) and excellent visibility make for comfortable encounters. Less crowded than Maldives or Hawaii.
Best months: May–October Encounter type: Cleaning stations and passage dives (scuba) Cost: $2,500–$5,000/week

Night Dive vs Cleaning Station vs Feeding Aggregation
Night dives (Hawaii): Engineered encounters — lights attract plankton, plankton attracts mantas. Reliable, accessible, beginner-friendly. Not "wild" in the traditional sense, but the experience is extraordinary.
Cleaning stations (Maldives, Raja Ampat, Komodo, Palau): Natural behavior at specific reef locations. You hover at a respectful distance and watch. Encounter quality depends on the day — sometimes 10 mantas, sometimes none.
Feeding aggregations (Hanifaru Bay, Maldives): Seasonal, weather-dependent, and when it happens, otherworldly. Hundreds of mantas in a small lagoon. Typically snorkeling, not scuba.
Responsible Manta Encounters
Mantas are listed as Vulnerable by IUCN. Guidelines:
1. Don't chase them. Position yourself near the cleaning station and wait. 2. Stay below. Mantas are more comfortable when divers are below them. 3. No touching. Their mucus layer protects against infection. Your touch removes it. 4. No flash photography. Ambient light or video lights only. 5. Limit your group size. Choose operators who cap divers at cleaning stations. 6. Don't block the cleaning station. If you're on the station, mantas won't come.
Photography Tips
- Wide angle is mandatory. 10–17mm rectilinear or fisheye.
- Shoot from below. Belly patterns are unique — your photos contribute to population ID.
- Use ambient light. Strobes at cleaning stations can spook mantas.
- Pre-focus to 1.5–2m. No time to autofocus when a manta banks toward you.

I'm Chad. Chemist. Diver. A manta ray once hovered motionless above me for 30 seconds at a cleaning station in Raja Ampat. We made eye contact. It was smarter than me. I'm sure of it.
