When to Go Diving: Month-by-Month Destination Guide
Dive travel is seasonal in a way that generic "best time to visit" articles usually get wrong. It's not just about weather. It's about what's in the water.
Manta ray aggregations happen in specific windows. Whale sharks appear on specific migration routes. Visibility peaks when the current brings clean oceanic water and bottoms out when the rains stir up sediment. You can dive most destinations year-round, but the difference between going in the right month and the wrong month can be the difference between a good trip and an extraordinary one.
Here's where to go, month by month.
January
Maldives — The northeast monsoon season (November–April) brings flat seas and good visibility. Whale sharks congregate around South Ari Atoll during these months, peaking December–February. January is consistently the best month for whale shark density in the region. → [Maldives site details and scoring](/dive-sites/maldives)
Red Sea, Egypt — Peak visibility in the Red Sea coincides with cooler winter months. 30–40m viz at Ras Mohammed and around the northern Red Sea. The Thistlegorm is less crowded in January than in summer. → [Egyptian Red Sea site details](/dive-sites/egyptian-red-sea)
Caribbean (Bonaire, Cozumel, Cayman Islands) — The Caribbean dry season runs roughly November–April. January delivers reliable sunshine, minimal rain, and calm seas. Visibility peaks at 25–40m across most Caribbean sites. → [Caribbean destinations by month](/best/month/january)
February
Maldives — Continues to be excellent. February often sees the highest manta ray sightings in North and South Malé Atolls before the monsoon transition. → [Maldives diving information](/dive-sites/maldives)
Bonaire — Bonaire's weather is virtually consistent year-round (it's south of the hurricane belt), but February marks the middle of peak season. All dive sites accessible, no rain-related visibility drop. → [Bonaire site details and scoring](/dive-sites/bonaire)
Red Sea, Egypt — Hammerheads are reliably at Elphinstone in February. Water temperature drops to 20–22°C in winter — bring a 5mm wetsuit. → [Egyptian Red Sea site details](/dive-sites/egyptian-red-sea)
→ [Best diving in February](/best/month/february)
March
Thailand (Similan Islands) — The Similan Islands National Park is open October–April, and March delivers optimal conditions: calm seas, 25–30m visibility, water temperature 28–29°C. Whale sharks visit the shallower bommies and whale shark season peaks March–April. → [Thailand diving information](/dive-sites/similan-islands)
Socorro Islands, Mexico — Still within the prime November–May window. March typically offers the best weather for the offshore crossing from Cabo San Lucas, with calmer seas than November–January. → [Socorro Islands site details](/dive-sites/socorro-islands)
Cayman Islands — Dry season continues. The annual migration of southern stingrays around the Grand Cayman banks is in full swing, and Stingray City conditions are optimal. → [Cayman Islands site details and scoring](/dive-sites/cayman-islands)
→ [Best diving in March](/best/month/march)
April
Raja Ampat, Indonesia — October–April is the prime season for Raja Ampat. April is the last good month before transitional weather makes some crossings rough. Seas are calm, the Dampier Strait manta aggregation is active, and current conditions are favorable. → [Raja Ampat site details and scoring](/dive-sites/raja-ampat)
Galápagos Islands, Ecuador — April marks the beginning of the Galápagos transition season. Visibility is decent (15–20m), temperatures are warm (25°C+), and the whale shark season that peaks in July–October is beginning. → [Galápagos site details and scoring](/dive-sites/galapagos-islands)
Australia (Great Barrier Reef) — The wet season is ending. April is the beginning of the best visibility season on the GBR. Water temperature 26–27°C, no stinger season concerns yet. → [Great Barrier Reef site details](/dive-sites/great-barrier-reef)
→ [Best diving in April](/best/month/april)
May
Palau, Micronesia — Palau's peak season runs March–May. May delivers the best combination of visibility (25–40m regularly) and the manta aggregations at German Channel before summer weather patterns shift conditions. → [Palau site details and scoring](/dive-sites/palau)
Tubbataha Reef, Philippines — Tubbataha's only accessible season is March–June, with May being the optimal month. UNESCO-protected atoll, no anchoring, limited liveaboard permits. Whale sharks, hammerheads, thresher sharks. → [Tubbataha Reef information](/dive-sites/tubbataha-reef)
Maldives — The monsoon transition month. Some itineraries move to the eastern atolls as western visibility drops. A knowledgeable liveaboard operator navigates this well.
→ [Best diving in May](/best/month/may)
June
Galápagos Islands, Ecuador — The cold Humboldt current arrives in June, dropping water temperature to 20–22°C and dramatically improving visibility. The whale shark season at Darwin and Wolf islands begins. Hammerhead schools are concentrating. → [Galápagos site details and scoring](/dive-sites/galapagos-islands)
Sipadan Island, Malaysia — June marks the beginning of optimal conditions for Sipadan — the ITCZ moves north and seas calm. Hammerhead sharks are more reliably seen in June–August here than any other time. → [Sipadan site details and scoring](/dive-sites/sipadan-island)
Australia (Great Barrier Reef) — Full peak season. Cool, dry, excellent visibility. The Coral Sea is accessible. Minke whales appear in the ribbon reefs of the northern GBR in June–July. → [Great Barrier Reef site details](/dive-sites/great-barrier-reef)
→ [Best diving in June](/best/month/june)
July
Galápagos Islands, Ecuador — Peak whale shark month at Darwin and Wolf. The cold, nutrient-rich water brings whale sharks in numbers that no other destination consistently matches — 10+ whale sharks on a single dive site is not unusual during a good July week. → [Galápagos site details and scoring](/dive-sites/galapagos-islands)
Maldives (manta season) — The southwest monsoon brings the manta aggregation season. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll begins to see aggregations that build through October. → [Maldives site details and scoring](/dive-sites/maldives)
Cocos Island, Costa Rica — Hammerhead season at Cocos peaks June–October. July often delivers the densest hammerhead schools. Combined with whale sharks and multiple shark species, July makes Cocos worth the 36-hour crossing. → [Cocos Island site details](/dive-sites/cocos-island)
→ [Best diving in July](/best/month/july)
August
Maldives (Hanifaru Bay) — Peak manta aggregation month. August–October sees the highest concentrations of manta rays at Hanifaru. The UNESCO-protected bay limits snorkelers to 75 at a time. Arrive early or go by permit with a liveaboard. → [Maldives site details and scoring](/dive-sites/maldives)
Galápagos Islands, Ecuador — Whale shark season continues. Visibility is at its best in August — the cold upwelling keeps plankton concentrated and megafauna dense. → [Galápagos site details and scoring](/dive-sites/galapagos-islands)
Sipadan Island, Malaysia — Optimal visibility month (25–30m+). Barracuda tornadoes and jackfish schools at their densest. Book permits months in advance — August is peak season. → [Sipadan site details and scoring](/dive-sites/sipadan-island)
→ [Best diving in August](/best/month/august)
